The BKF award pays tribute to the artists' own exhibition venues

"Artists' own exhibition venues and projects are driven by an admirable commitment and are often financed by the artists' own funds. They play an important role in the development of the entire artistic life, and deserve far more recognition and visibility.'

The winning statuette Artist Run Space was created by sculptor Anders Bonnesen.

That's what Nis Rømer, chairman of the Association of Visual Artists (BKF), who, together with the association's board, is behind the BKF Artist-run Exhibitions of the Year award.

Artist-run Exhibition Venues of the Year 2021 consists of three awards of DKK 25.000 each, which this year were awarded at the new fair for artist-run projects Juxtapose Art Fair.

It happened on Godsbanen in Aarhus, Friday 20 August 2021.

Criteria
This year's Artist-run Exhibition Venues can be both permanent and temporary, physical and virtual. The criterion is that the place is run by visual artists (possibly in collaboration with other professional groups). Exhibitions by individual artists are not considered. The award is intended for new initiatives and exhibitions in the future.

Jury chooses
This year, the jury consisted of curator and art advisor Mette Woller, visual artist Sofie Thorsen and BKF's chairman Nis Rømer.

Together, the jury members choose three winners from among all the nominees. The winners were revealed at the award ceremony at the Juxtapose Art Fair on 20 August 2021.

"Artist-run exhibition spaces create professional opportunities for other artists and contribute with critical thinking, experiments and new forms of visual culture. It is a special form of collegial collaboration that often experiments with the framework and form of how art can be displayed. They all contribute to renewing and developing the art scene. With the award, BKF wants to recognize the significant artistic development work carried out in these projects.'

We hope that many will nominate artist-run places this year as well. In this way, we all help to make visible and celebrate the work of colleagues.

The money for the Artist-run Exhibition Venue of the Year award comes from BKF's share of Copydan's collective funds, which thus benefits the entire stand.
