Amsterdam Light Festival – Edition #8 (2019 – 2020)
Deadline Monday 21 January 2019
Amsterdam Light Festival invites creatives from around the world – from artists to designers, engineers to architects, and professionals to students – to submit a concept for a light artwork. The festival’s eighth edition will take place from 28 November 2019 until 19 January 2020 in the city centre of Amsterdam. An international jury, together with the festival’s curatorial team, will review the concepts and select approximately 30 artists to create an artwork.
Annual Winter Festival
Amsterdam Light Festival is an annual winter festival in the Netherlands that presents high-quality light art in Amsterdam’s vibrant city centre. Amsterdam’s world-renowned canals, historic sites and various waterfronts offer visitors a unique way to experience light artworks.
Artistic director Lennart Booij: “Amsterdam Light Festival brings people from different backgrounds together in the dark winter times. We aim to involve, inspire and enlighten visitors, creators and partners with light art.”
For Edition #8 Amsterdam Light Festival is looking for artistic and inventive interpretations of the theme ‘Disrupt!’. To disrupt means to disturb, disorder or interrupt. A disruption is usually seen as inconvenient but can also be positive and sometimes essential to trigger the need for change to take place. The festival calls on artists, designers and architects to interrogate, test and awaken the city of Amsterdam with intriguing light artworks. We challenge artists to create light sculptures that explore the theme and at the same time examine other figurative or poetic ways to depict disruption.
Designed for Amsterdam
Each year, Amsterdam Light Festival presents an exhibition of light artworks in Amsterdam’s city centre. The artworks are specifically designed for the festival and make use of the city’s unique canal layout. The festival is looking for monumental installations that can be positioned on, above, or in the water and artworks that can be placed on land and can be experienced from up close, walked through, interacted with and reacted to.
