From Skagen to Møn, from the West Jutland heath to the capital's industrial areas, in the forests and far out in the countryside: throughout Denmark, visual artists create their own, independent project spaces for contemporary art and show important, wildly growing and relevant exhibitions that give an insight into the very latest, that moves in the art life.
The artists' own exhibition venues are both temporary and more permanent in nature, but what they have in common is that they inspire the professional development of the entire artistic life, rethink exhibition formats and give both young and established artists opportunities to reach out to the public - on art's own terms.
Despite the COVID-19 crisis, the places are vibrant and ready to invite the public in as society slowly begins to open up. That is why the Union of Visual Artists is celebrating again this year the great work that takes place in the self-organized art life.
The award ceremony itself, which was supposed to take place on May 16, has been postponed to June 13, when we can again meet in slightly larger gatherings. Follow along here at www.bkf.dk and on BKF's Facebook and Instagram, where we will inform you about exactly how the awards ceremony will take place as soon as possible.
Time and place of the awards ceremony: The BKF prize Artist-run Exhibition Venues of the Year will be awarded on Saturday 13 June 2020 at 16-18 in café Polykrom in the Free Exhibition Building.
Hoping to see as many as possible – of course while complying with the authorities' guidelines – so that we can celebrate the artists' own platforms together!
Jury chooses the winners
During the spring, everyone was able to nominate one or more artist-run exhibition venues by sending an email with a reason to the Visual Artists Association. A total of 65 places have been nominated this year, see the overview below on the page.
Among the nominees, 6 places are chosen for a shortlist, including 3 winners.
The selection is made by a jury, consisting of BKF's chairman Nis Rømerand Farid Salti og Malene Dam from two of previous years' winners, Kunsthal next door and Vermilion Sands, respectively.
Artist-run Exhibition Venues of the Year 2020 consists of three prizes of DKK 25.000 each. The money comes from VISDA's collective copyright funds.
The winner's names will be published in June here on bkf.dk, as well as on BKF's Facebook page and Instagram.
