Remember the artists in the new museum act

Culture Minister Jakob Engel-Schmidt has called a meeting on 27 February with, among other things, representatives from all state-recognised museums, who are invited to give input to a reform of the existing Museums Act. The content producers, including visual artists, are unfortunately not represented at the meeting.

"It is stated in the government foundation that a museum reform must, among other things, create a fairer and more transparent distribution of museum funds, and therefore we hope that our lack of representation will not mean that we are forgotten, but that a forthcoming law will, on the contrary, make visible the content producers' work and remuneration at exhibitions and productions in general," says Marie Thams, head of the Association of Visual Artists.

"One would wish that the distribution of funds given to state-supported institutions be made available, so that it becomes possible to follow the money - and thus also which amounts go to the artists. I think it will come to the back of many minds how small a portion of the budget for an exhibition goes to the content producers. At the same time, as a natural consequence of the transparency of the distribution of museum funds, we propose that it be written into the Museums Act that the museums are obliged to pay fair fees to artists," says Marie Thams.

The Minister of Culture has invited all state-recognised museums as well as the National Association of Municipalities, the Organization of Danish Museums, Danish Business and Danish Industry to the upcoming meeting.
