Cyanotype is magic and chemistry. It is a printing technique where the sun is used as an exposure source. It is a playful and experimental technique where you cannot always completely control the result. It is also one of the world's oldest photographic printing techniques invented in 1842 by John Herschel. The technique was used in 1843 by the British botanist Anna Atkins for her beautiful and sensuous cyanotypes of seaweed and algae. By mixing two different chemicals and water, a light-sensitive emulsion is obtained, which is applied to paper (or other materials that can withstand being placed in water). We will experiment with lighting times, "wet cyanotype", adding salt, spices, soap suds, etc., and we will try bleaching and toning the cyanotypes. Feel free to bring flowers and plants (possibly pressed) and digital photos that can be used to make transparencies, flat objects, templates... and lots of sunshine!
