Who are we?
The Art Museums of Skagen is one museum with three locations in Skagen – all of them with focus on members of the Scandinavian artists' colony the Skagen painters, who were active in Skagen from the end of the nineteenth century. With Skagen AiR, the historical studios of the Skagen painters located in the historical and beautiful gardens of the Art Museums of Skagen will be revitalized.

Who can apply?
Professional Nordic* artists may apply for a residency. To apply, applicants must have completed a relevant artistic educational program or have documented experience within professional artistic contexts.
*Applicants must be citizens of and living in one of the following countries: Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Greenland, Iceland, or the Faroe Islands.
Our residency language is English, and it is expected that you will be able to give an artist talk in English and participate in activities where other artists' work is presented in English.
As an artist in residence you will receive a monthly allowance of €1400 to cover living expenses, local transport, and the cost of materials and production. The allowance is paid at the end of each month.
The aim of Skagen AiR
The aim of the program is to foster exchanges between the resident artist and the local businesses community, the surrounding nature, the people of Skagen, and fellow resident artists, and to support the artistic process and research phase of the resident artist by giving them time , space, and opportunity for reflection and focus.
The residency offers Nordic artists the opportunity to develop new and valuable relationships with the community in Skagen and the unique nature and the history of the artist colony that originates here for the benefit of the regional art scene and Nordic contemporary art in general.
The period of the residency program
Professional Nordic artists can apply for a twelve-week stay at Skagen AiR during the following period:
28 August 2024–20 November 2024
27 November 2024-19 February 2025
26 February 2025-21 May 2025

From 2024 onwards, the calls will be for three residency periods per year.
For each of the periods, three artists will be granted a residency.
How will your application be evaluated?
The following criteria are used in the evaluation of your application:
Documentation of experience within professional contexts
Documentation of former collaborative projects and the names and contact details of two referees who can comment on recent work and artistic development at a professional level
An ambitious plan for your residency seeking to attain artistic quality at a high professional level
Documentation that your proposed plan and the Skagen AiR residency program framework is clear and mutually relevant. One of the programme's main aims is to build new relationships between you as a resident artist and the cultural history, community, and people of Skagen.
Your application is evaluated on the basis of your motivation and reflections about the proposed plan. The jury will also appreciate knowing your ideas on artistic themes and your hopes for the outcome of your residency, as well as any potential connections to local companies, associations, and citizens that you wish to establish.

Your application will be evaluated by a jury consisting of:
Lisette Vind Ebbesen, director at Art Museums of Skagen
Jane Jin Kaisen, visual artist, film maker, and professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts
Katrine Stochholm, Artist, Composer and Teacher in songwriting Royal Academy of Music
Jens Christians Grøndahl, award-winning writer and lecturer.
Application process
Your application to Skagen AiR must be submitted electronically via an online application form here
We recommend that you read the electronic application form and have all the necessary information and documents for attachment ready before you begin the uploading process.
When submitting your application form, the following must be attached (max. 10 MB in total):
A concise resume containing professional experience and collaborative projects, educational background, and names and contact details of two professional referees (max. 2 MB)
Documentation of earlier work within a professional context (eg, images, videos, audio files, or similar content, max. 8 MB).
No other material must be included in the application.
As an applicant, it is your responsibility to ensure that the application is complete and meets the above requirements.
You will be notified of the jury's decision within seven weeks from the deadline of the call. During this period, all applications will be prepared for, distributed to, and assessed by the jury.
